Photographing Warren Gatland and Shaun EdwardsFriday October 28, 2016
The Events Room Rugby Dinner at Parkway Hotel & Spa in Cwmbran (26th October 2016)
Warren Gatland and Shaun Edwards. The head coach and defence coach who helped change the face of Wales Rugby Union, hopefully forever. There I was, armed with 2 cameras and flashguns, pointing the lens at two of my rugby heroes. This couldn't be classed as work, could it?
Matt and Mark from The Events Room had asked me to photograph their big 2016 Rugby Dinner and I jumped at the opportunity. I am a big sports fan, especially rugby, and I couldn't wait to hear what the two coaches had to say. A selection of the photos from the event can be seen on my website.
Warren Gatland has an incredible CV. The evening compere, Rick O'Shea from Scrum V, read out a list of his achievements both as a player in New Zealand and as an All Black, and as a phenomenally successful coach. It was very impressive.
At present, Gatland is on a sabatical from the Wales Head Coaching role as he is busy planning how to mastermind a British and Irish Lions win in New Zealand in 2017. I was fortunate enough to be in the stadium for the final Lions test against Australia in 2013 and saw one of the most incredible test matches ever. Although the players had to perform to win, Gatland had masterminded a strategy and game-plan that literally took the Wallabies apart 41-16. If anyone can implement a plan to win in New Zealand, then it will be Gatland.
I have photographed Shaun Edwards previously in Swansea for The Events Room. Again, his list of sporting achievements, both as a player and coach, is amazing. It is no wonder that they both command so much respect in the Welsh dressing room.
The interview by Rick O'Shea was enlightening. Both Gatland and Edwards spoke honestly and frankly about Welsh rugby and the future. Both expressed their admiration for the commitment of the present Wales squad. There is a winning mentality being nurtured in the camp and I only hope that this materialises in the Autumn internationals and 2017 Six Nations.
There was an added bonus, when they both kindly signed a Ty Hafan #DadsBareAll calendar, which can now be auctioned to raise extra money for the children's hospice.
The Events Room also used the evening to raise money for the Wooden Spoon charity. I had worked with Martin and the Wooden Spoon team at their Rugby lunch at the Swalec Stadium earlier this month and they do a fantastic job. The monies raised help the Wooden Spoon support projects to improve children's lives.
It was fantastic Rugby Dinner and I was just thrilled to be involved. #lovemyjob
The photos from the Rugby Dinner can be seen on my website.
