Photographing Josh Training for the Ultimate Fitness Challenge

"Can you hold it there?" I asked.

"Are you kidding?" Josh replied.

Josh was hanging from a bar by his feet and I wanted a photograph of his body held at a perfect ninety degree angle in an inverted abdominal crunch.  It was the end of a long training session at the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff.

We got the shot and Josh had a chance to recover before moving on to the next discipline.

At this point you may wonder what this is all about.  Photos of a guy training.  So what!  But this isn't just any sort of training by any average Joe Bloggs.  This is intense in capital neon letters.

Josh Llewellyn-Jones is in training to complete a 24 hr challenge.  This includes:

However, that is not all.  You see, Josh has cystic fibrosis.  Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine.  Long-term issues include difficulty breathing and coughing up mucus as a result of frequent lung infections.

When Josh asked me to get some photographs that he could use for publicity, I had no idea of the extent of the challenge.  This only unfolded as we went from the rowing machine, to floor exercises, to the training machines, and then onto the bike.  I was just glad to be behind the camera.

I had to ask Josh to repeat exercises just so we could get the right shot.  And he just did it.  Time and time again.  You could see the grimace on his face.  He was pushing himself through pain barriers.  This was not only a challenge physically, but also mentally.

I am in awe of what Josh is doing.  The dedication, commitment and mental strength needed to complete this challenge is incredible.  But he is making a difference.  Josh is showing the world what is possible.  He is inspiring thousands of other CF sufferers.

As I took the next set of photographs, with Josh on a cycling machine wearing a mask that simulates training at altitude, I realised that I was in the presence of a very special man.

And I have no doubt that he will complete the challenge.

Josh' story has been featured widely in the UK media including:
