Yr Wyddfa 2023 Cancer Research Wales

At 3:30am I looked out of my bunk house room and saw pouring rain.  It was the first time it has rained like this in weeks.  My heart sank.  At 5:20am, the excited Cancer Research Wales walkers stood in a damp Pen-y-Pass car park.  Thankfully, the rain had eased.  Under the watchful eye of the JT Expeditions team, we set off to the top of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) following the PYG track.  As we climbed, the weather broke, with the rain fading away.  Very quickly the daunting peak of Yr Wyddfa comes into view, intermittently covered with rapidly moving cloud.  We plodded forward, clambering along the rocky pathway.  At 7:20am we reached the saddle where the path turns to take you up to the summit.  Spirits were high.  Faces were full of smiles.  By 7:50am we were at the top.  Yr Wyddfa had been conquered.  Mountain 1 was complete.  There was more excitement when we found out that the boyfriend of one of our team had, unknowingly to her, climbed the mountain to surprise her with a wedding proposal.  How wonderfully romantic!  Then we set off down the long and unforgiving track back down to Llanberis.  At 10:50 we reached the car park, where the JT team were serving hot drinks and delicious cake from Jake’s mum.  We had walked 8.5 miles and climbed 2,350 feet in 5 hours 42 minutes.
