Photographing a Royal Visit to EmmausThursday July 28, 2016
Photographs of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall at Emmaus in Bridgend
When you get asked to photograph Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall of a visit to the new Emmaus residential community in Bridgend there is only one answer. Yes please!
I first had the opportunity to photograph the Nant Lais building in early February 2015, before the renovation had started. The windows were boarded up with graffiti covered panels and the grounds overgrown and covered in empty bottles of alcohol. The photographs really illustrate the dilapidated and sad state of the building.
The transformation since that day has been incredible and I had the chance to return and photograph the official opening by Wales First Minister Carwyn Jones in February 2016.
However, this was something very special. A visit by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall. Her visit illustrated the importance of the new residential community where formerly homeless people are given a stable home and work in one of the Emmaus charity shops. The Emmaus Nant Lais residence provides precious support to people who have found themselves homeless and sleeping on the streets. It is an amazing place and I have been fortunate enough to meet and talk with some of the residents.
The Duchess of Cornwall was wonderful. The time she gave the residents was totally unrushed and she was so enthused by the work Emmaus has done. It was wonderful to get photographs of The Duchess sipping tea out of a mug whilst sitting around a table in the kitchen area with residents and staff. She then had a tour, followed by a more formal presentation in the main lounge area.
A selection of the photographs can be seen in the Press Photography section on my website.
Being a Professional Photographer means that you are a voyeur to the world, but that allows you to see things from a different perspective and meet some amazing people. I feel very lucky to have photographed The Duchess of Cornwall, Carwyn Jones, Peter Capaldi, Phil Bennett and others. They have all been wonderfully engaging and charming, and often made my work easier in getting that all important photograph.
I'm now just looking forward to the next Photography Assignment!
