The Magic of Manufacturing
Having spent the majority of my career in engineering and manufacturing, getting an opportunity to photograph some of the processes and operations is always a pleasure. I regularly work with Bunting Magnetics Europe Ltd, a designer and manufacturer of Magnets, Magnetic Assemblies and Magnetic Separators based in Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire. During a visit in December, I took the opportunity to take some photographs to highlight that this is a full-on manufacturing operation.
After photographing welding, I moved onto the Laser Cutter. This was visibly exciting, with sparks showering out from the intense laser light burning through sheet steel. The laser head darted back and forth, following a pre-programmed path as it sliced through the metal sheet. I took a range of photographs, displayed in colour and in black & white. Also, I have written a separate blog on the benefits of using a Laser Cutter, which can be read on their WordPress site.
On LinkedIn over the past few days, I have seen a number of discussions around getting young people interested in the manufacturing sector. It is a growing problem and when I was Managing Director of a South Wales engineering company I experienced, first hand, the challenges of engaging the youth. We took on apprentices, who turned out to be fantastic and hopefully that started a long career in manufacturing.
Hopefully, showing off the manufacturing processes with photographs and video will ignite the imagination of youngsters and encourage more interest in seeking a career in an industry that is the core of any economy.
