Day 2 Bala Lake to Ponterwyd

Day 2 was when the challenge started getting challenging!  Up again at 4:30am and out ready to start hiking by 6am.  In the drizzle, Jake and Joe took us hiking for stage 1, a 8.3 miles from the Glan-llyd Outdoor Activity Centre to Drws-y-Nant, ascending 772 feet in 3 hours and 11 minutes.  After bacon and sausage rolls, we climbed onto our bikes for the rest of the day out in the wilderness with Dean and Will.  At least the rain had abated.  Our first stop was Corris, along minor roads and up steep climbs.  We reached our checkpoint after covering 14 miles in 2 hours and 45 minutes, climbing 1750 feet.  From Corris, we had a short 6 mile 49 mins ride to Machynlleth, ascending 607 feet.  Now the challenge got interesting.  The next stage was brutal, up tracks which were impossible to cycle, at least for us, and over mountains with no and very poor paths.  At the time we thought that this was extreme mountain biking, but that was yet to come.  After 4 hours and 27 minutes we reached Ponterwyd.  The 18 miles we had cycled felt like 50 and we had ascended 2800 feet.  Food and sleep could not come quick enough.  Just Giving > https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/bike-boat-boot
