Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal

Just outside Ripon in North Yorkshire,UK stand the extensive ruins of an ancient abbey alongside a spectacular water garden.  The Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal UNESCO World Heritage Site is managed by The National Trust.  The Fountains Abbey was founded in 1132 and was home to a Cistercian Order of monks until the Dissolution of the Monasteries ordered by Henry VIII in 1539.  The estate was purchased by The National Trust in 1983.  The Studley Royal estate was inherited by John Aislabie in 1693.  Inspired by the work of great French landscape gardeners, his and then his son’s vision was to create a spectacular water garden.  In 1767, John Aislabie’s son William bought the Fountain Abbey ruins to complete the garden.  The National Trust has maintained the styling of the original gardens, providing an incredible location for walking and historical discovery.
