The spectacular Highclere Castle is widely recognised as the location of the globally-loved television drama series Downton Abbey. Highclere Castle is located near Newbury in Hampshire, United Kingdom and dates back to 749 when an Anglo-Saxon King granted the estate to the Bishops of Winchester. Bishop William of Wykeham built a beautiful medieval palace and gardens in the park. The present day castle is a redevelopment of an earlier 1679 red brick building, when Sir Charles Barry, who designed the Houses of Parliament, transformed the house into Highclere Castle in 1842. During a tour of the inside of the castle, you are introduced to so much more history of this amazing building. A fantastic and highly recommended trip for both historical building enthusiasts and fans of Downton Abbey.
